Are you one of those thrifty-types who's always looking for an angle, always trying to stretch every last penny? You know who we're talking about: Montel Williams bases whole episodes around you, the kind of person who reuses tea bags and separates sheets of triple-ply paper towels. Unfortunately, it now looks like you now have one less trick at your disposal. According to Zach Honig over at Gearlog, running your MacBook or MacBookPro without its battery (trying to squeeze out an extra month or two of battery life) will cause a significant performance decrease: we're talking upwards of 40 percent. When he checked Apple's knowledgebase, it turns out that this is by design -- processor speed is reduced when the machine detects that its relying solely on A/C to prevent it from demanding more power than the adapter alone can provide (and any nasty shutdowns that would result). We don't know if we buy this line of reasoning, but one thing is certain: if you know what's good for you, you'll leave that battery where it belongs.

Man, you just can't win these days. So Apple offers up an energy-efficient, forward-thinking Mini DisplayPort on its latest MacBook / MacBook Pro, and now users that are still rocking displays sans HDCP-compliant HDMI / DVI ports are up fecal's creek without a paddle. Apparently select content in the iTunes Store is laced in HDCP, which isn't all that unexpected in and of itself; the problem comes in when you realize that the new unibody machines don't offer a VGA / VGA-to-component output, meaning that you have to connect it to an HDCP-compliant display if you want to see anything. We know, one word in particular keeps coming to mind to describe this fiasco: awesome.

PC-to-Mac USB file-transfer cables and migration utilities have been out for a while, but Belkin's out today with a new take on the idea it says makes the transition "as seamless as possible." We're guessing that has more to do with the Switch-to-Mac Cable's bundled software than the dongle itself -- Belkin's custom Migration Assistant (not the OS X assistant) automatically transfers your media, files, and internet prefs, leaving you free to try on mock turtlenecks and practice your air of quiet superiority. Should be out soon for $50.

The long-anticipated refresh of Apple's line of MacBook laptops finally happened, and brings with it not just the usual speed updates, but a whole new architecture that seems to be aimed at pleasing just about everyone, environmental groups included.

Grantwood Technology has introduced the MacVelope, a notebook sleeve designed for the MacBook Air, and the MacVelope Companion Bag. The sleeve is designed to look like a standard manila colored mail envelope, similar to what Steve Jobs used for demonstration at the 2008 Macworld Expo.

A new solar panel kit for the MacBook Air called Apple Ju!cz will both charge and power the laptop at the same time.
The smallest 19-watt, which takes 14 hours to recharge the laptop, will sell for $500;
the 8-hour, 29-watt model is $600
and the 5-hour, 58-watt model is $1,000.

The idea of solar energy is really great. What we don't like is the price.
